$30 million hit as Newcastle 500 axed

The Newcastle leg of the V8 Supercars has officially been axed from the calendar this year, along with the Gold Coast leg.

V8 super cars spokesman said “We’ve worked with our partners in state and local governments, and over the past two weeks, and the discussions that we’ve had, we’ve taken the decision to exclude them from the remainder of this calendar for a range of reasons – not withstanding the disruption that the residents of those cities have already been through this COVID-19 crisis.”

The decision is a blow for Newcastle as the event generates around $30 million for the local economy at time when we need it more than ever, however if the event was to go ahead it would be a tv only event.

Sydney will be second round of the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in a two-day TV-only event across June 27-28.
